I recently learned that the song was inspired by the banning of rock music in Iran during the “rule” of Ayatollah Khomeini. I have never been one to really listen to lyrics closely and had always thought that the song had been inspired by the Algerian War of Independence from 1954 until 1962 against the French occupation. There is an amazing film about this conflict and the orginaization of revelutionaries in the Casbah of Algiers called Battaglia di Algeri. It is a black-and-white film by Gillo Pontecorvo from 1966. Top ten films ever and an amazing song… Rock the Casbah.

JMoore - nice job on the middle eastern history. I knew about the satirical side of the song impugning Iran but have never heard of the Algerian War although I met the Algerian soccer team in the 1984 Olympics in LA where I was a security guard at the soccer training facility. Thanks. I will have to check out the film.
